When Miranda was a baby, I hated feeding her pureed baby food. It was messy and I felt it was such a hassle. Before I had Elliott I heard about baby led weaning. The idea intrigued me. So, now that it's time for me to really start thinking about solids, I'm trying to decide what to do. Right now we do a little bit of both methods with Elliott. Occasionally he will get fed purees by someone other than me, Adam or Nicole usually. Or sometimes when we're eating dinner we'll give him something we're having, depending on what it is. The only reason why I'm considering purees at all is because he's not quite coordinated enough to consistently pick up food, bring it to his mouth, bite, chew and swallow it yet. He is getting practice at it which is a good thing. Here are a bunch of pictures of Elliott eating broccoli and the little bit of cake he managed to steal from Adam.
I would like to add that he loved that piece of broccoli. He murdered it for a very long time. He got very little broccoli in him but he had a blast playing with it.
Maverick gladly helped with clean up.
Even Miranda proudly wore her messy face after cake.
Also, I love how every time I'm taking pictures of him eating, I get shots like these.

One thing to remember, especially with breastfeeding babies is that food before 1 is just for fun. So it doesn't really matter how much table food they are getting, they get enough nutrition nursing that they can just play with their food at least at the beginning. By the time they are 1 I do like about 10% of their diet to be table food, but it is such a minor amount that they quite easily figure it out on their own.
ReplyDeleteI've never had an issue with that philosophy and by the time both Desmond and Eloise were 15 months or so, they had switched over to about 75% table food 25% breastmilk.
I love how your daughter and I have the same name! So cute!
ReplyDeleteYup, I know that Sarah. He really only gets solids at most once or twice a week. He gets purees maybe once or twice a month. That's about it. He's still very much a boobie baby. I'm not really stressing about it but I know he's very interested in food so I don't want to hold him back, you know?
ReplyDelete@Miranda the Blonde Duck - Very cool! I think it's a very pretty name!
ReplyDeleteAnjie if he is interested in food, then just feed him dinner with Miranda. Just give him whatever you are giving her, as long as it falls in your safe to feed baby rules (everyone has different ones). He just needs a small portion, but then he gets to enjoy the food, play with it and possibly even eat some of it. Though it will make a big mess, but that is what vacuums and bath time is for.
