Elliott's Birth Story; Part One

(Sorry this took so long to get typed up!)

Later Thursday night I got a phone call from my OB. I braced myself for the news that I'd have to wait to hold my baby boy, but that is not what she told me. She said the final results came back positive for lung maturity and that we were going ahead with the original plan. I was so happy and so relieved to hear that. I did manage to get some sleep that night but it was a very anxious sleep.

Luckily 4am came quickly so Adam and I got up and started our day. We sat around, drank our coffee and checked up on Facebook. Nicole had slept over the night before and was staying at the house to keep an eye on Miranda for us. I don't know if was nerves or my horrendous cough but I ended up getting sick in the sink for a little while before we left. Ew! We left for the hospital around 5:30 or so. When we got there registration went super quick and we were down in Labor and Delivery shortly after 6am. I made Adam take one last belly shot before I changed into my hospital gown.

Due to some technicality with blood work we had to wait around for a couple of hours before they could take me back to the OR. That was fun. They had me hooked up to the monitor so Adam and I listened to our son's heartbeat and watched TV all the while getting more and more excited about the new arrival. Finally it was time and Adam changed over into his sexy scrub gear.

They let me get up and walk to the OR which was nice. Adam had to wait outside while they put in my spinal. Actually, I was getting both a spinal and an epidural. The spinal is quick and awesome for during the surgery and then the epidural was for pain relief afterwards. Once I was all hooked up and ready to go they let Adam in.

Everything for me seemed to slow *way* down at this point. Them getting to the baby seemed to take forever. They had a bit of fat and scar tissue to work through. Adam kept consoling me, telling me it was okay and trying to get me to relax. I had almost every emotion running through me, I was a wreck. Finally the doctors could reach the baby and out my little man came. He let out some awesome cries and of course I started bawling the second I heard him. They showed him to me over the curtain and then handed him over to the pediatricians.

Things became quieter then and of course, I was worried. I kept asking if he was okay. Adam wasn't able to see much with the doctors hovering around him.

The doctors came over and told us that he's okay but he was having a little trouble breathing and was going to have to go to the Special Care nursery for a little while. I was pretty heartbroken about this but I knew there was a chance of this since he was being born a little early. The doctors took the camera for us and snapped a couple shots.

After they weighed and measured him (5lbs 15oz; 18.5" long) they wrapped him up and let Adam hold him for a couple minutes so we could both say hi. It was comforting to be able to see him and give him a kiss. Those first few moments never last long enough and they quickly scooped him up and took him away to the nursery.

To be continued...
