Of Sickness and Ice Fishing

This weekend was supposed to be something great! My husband went away on Thursday and left me with the family vehicle! I could take the kids anywhere at anytime! We were going to see family and go to the library with friends and it promised to be awesome!!

Enter ... the stomach bug ... *DUN DUN DUUNN!!*

I have no idea where it came from, but we think it struck Elliott first while he was staying at Auntie Nicole's house. He had some extra special diapers there and one puking instance (his one and only of this bug). Next, Adam started with the same symptoms all of Thursday. Thursday night it got me, and very early Friday morning it got Miranda too. Elliott is still having his extra special diapers, but they seem to be getting better. Otherwise, everyone else is better. It was a short bug, but it was just enough to kill my weekend of awesomeness. Instead of being out and about and socializing, I've been cleaning up mess after mess after mess. Fun times!!

Lucky Adam went away to his annual ice fishing competition. They call it by a not so nice name, (shield your children's eyes!) the Holy Shit Ice Fishing Derby. How clever on their part that the initials of Holy Shit Ice Fishing spells FISH backwards. Adam hasn't won this thing for a while and didn't win this year. This is a completely foreign idea to me. I don't mind the occasional half-day of ice fishing. But to devote an entire long weekend to it and spend two or three DAYS on the ice is out of the question for me. However, Adam enjoys it and he goes and I'm glad he goes. He needs these trips away with his dad. He needs the time away from us to just be himself and forget the stresses of being a dad. It's a good thing they always have this thing in Vermont, because there hasn't been much ice making weather around these parts, which is odd. I'm scared for the summer we're going to have.

Also, this thing is very contagious! Adam has already passed it on to his dad and one other ice fisherman. So, I apologize in advance if we gave it to anyone else. I stayed in and away from others as much as I could during the thick of it. Not sure how long it sticks around after the symptoms are gone though.

  1. My hubs and I are big believers in getting one away trip a year to unplug. The Holy Shit Ice Fishing Derby sounds like good times.

  3. Urgh, sorry about the stomach bug. I caught one about a month ago, 2 days before we were flying off for our vacation. The toddler caught it the night before our flight and the husband was puking on the plane! Needless to say, our first 2 days on vacation wasn't much of one.

And what an ingenious name for the ice fishing getaway!
