The Runaway Chicken

chicken

This is the chicken that caused a lot of confusion and drama around here. My neighbor happened to spot it wandering around the backyard. It's quite unusual for a chicken to just wander into the backyard so she wasn't sure what to do. My brother, mother and I went out to help catch it and figure out what do with it. I tried to pick it up with my bare hands, but that didn't work too well. My brother had gone inside and found a pillowcase. I distracted the chicken while he sneaked up behind it and threw the pillowcase over it. We kept it in there while I called around trying to find out what we should do with it. Animal Control, the Police and DEP were all of no help whatsoever. My mom ended up calling my Aunt and Uncle who own a farm and already have chickens. They said they'd come and get her (it laid an egg) the next day. I wanted to go around the neighborhood and find out if it belonged to someone close-by but couldn't convince anyone to come with me. We ended up putting the chicken in a laundry basket in my mother's garage for the night. Miranda was at the beach for the day but when she got home that night she was very excited to see the chicken.

The next day my Aunt and Uncle came over, we had a brunch together and spent time socializing. My Aunt rescues all sorts of birds and happened to have a bunch of baby robins in her car that she had to feed every half hour or so. Miranda was very intrigued to see them and watch them eat and drink. I certainly can't remember ever being that close to baby birds either. It was very neat. I was afraid that Miranda would try to touch them or something but she did really well. They took our little chicken friend with them when they left. I hope that wherever she came from that they aren't missing her too much.
